End of Autumn

The weather has cooled right down, and we’ve had two snowfalls so far this winter. The first was quite impressive, dumping about 6 inches of snow on the ground last week, and then some more at the weekend accompanied by freezing rain. It looks like, Al Gore notwithstanding, that it’s going to be a real doozy of a winter.

The last month the kids have been busy with their schoolwork, as well as enjoying the warm weather while it still lasted. Jenn took the kids picking apples at one of the nearby farms, and of course Hallowe’en was a huge hit again this year. This was the first time that Conall was able to really enjoy the trick-or-treating, although we were a little embarrassed at times when the owners of the houses we visited expected Conall to talk to them and he would just grab his candy. Even though he was only two and a half, he looked like a five year old ! He was dressed as SpongeBob Squarepants, Eoghan was a pirate, and Órla was a goth prom queen ! Even dad got dressed up, as Captain Jack Sparrow from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

I spent some time in the city, trying to get some work done and, while being only moderately successful at that, did manage to meet up with Eimear for lunch, as well as Barbara for dinner one night.

We had a great, although quiet, Thanksgiving here at the barn. It was just the five of us, with Bethany as well. But then on Saturday, Ann and Caitríona came to visit, and we had a grand night – although, truth be told, they passed out only halfway through the movie we were watching after dinner. On Sunday they lazed around Rhinebeck where they had breakfast and toured around with Jenn, Sue and the kids, and then they all disappeared for most of the day shopping, appearing back only when it was time to drop them off at the train into the city. They had a great time, shopping until they dropped, with very little culture ! Although we did manage to meet for dinner, as I wanted them to see the dining room at the AC. We had a great time, with Barbara and Seamus and Ivana joining us.
